TERMINAL CATALUNYA (TERCAT), A MEMBER OF THE HUTCHISON PORT HOLDINGS (HPH) GROUP, IS TO TAKE OVER THE SITE OF THE MUELLE PRAT CONTAINER TERMINAL FROM BARCELONA PORT AUTHORITY IN ORDER TO START CONSTRUCTION ON THE NEW QUAY.

Phase I will feature a 1,000-metre-long quay, eight super-post-panamax quay cranes with outreaches of 22 containers, a yard area of approximately 60 hectares, 18 container stacking blocks with 36 one-over-five automated stacking yard cranes (ASC), a fleet of shuttle carriers, tractors and trailers, an eight-track rail terminal, and administration and engineering buildings. The MUELLE PRAT container terminal will be installed with an automated terminal operating system called nGen, developed by HPH.

The quay cranes and ASCs will be supplied by Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC) and KoneCranes respectively. Five of these cranes have already been built at ZPMC’s plant in Shanghai, China.

A decision is expected soon on the civil works bid for the new container terminal. Five contractors submitted their bids in April, and these are under review.
